Ideally, every family with a newborn could have the peace of mind that comes with hiring a newborn care specialist, postpartum doula, or night nanny. We realize overnight newborn care isn’t an option for all families, but the Owlet Smart Sock is certainly the next best thing when it comes to providing the comfort of knowing your baby is sleeping safely.
The Owlet is much more than just a baby monitor. It’s a system that monitors your baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels through a Smart Sock that connects via Bluetooth to a base station and your smartphone. That way you’re covered in case the power goes out or your smartphone battery dies. The system will sound an alert if your child’s heart rate dips too low, rises too high, or if their oxygen level drops below a preset threshold.
From the moment I first heard about the Owlet, I knew this technology would be a game changer for new parents as well as newborn care specialists. I decided to purchase the Owlet to ensure my team was familiar with the technology, but soon realized I could put it to better use. My friend Amber, a mother of a premature baby, was struggling to sleep at night due to the high-risk nature of her daughter’s birth. She was willing to give the Owlet a try hoping that the monitoring of her baby’s vitals would provide an extra layer of assurance.
After a week, I checked in with Amber and she was thrilled to hear the results. She said “This product is awesome and worth every penny! It does so much more than just take heart rate and pulse ox. It provides comfort and peace of mind. I was able to sleep well as it creates a green hue in the room when her levels are good. All I had to do was open my eyes and see that hue. It’s such a great invention!”
After such a positive review, I was thrilled to run into the Owlet team at the ABC Kids Expo. The ABC Kids Expo is an annual event where all of the latest and greatest baby and kid products make their debut. Meeting the team behind the Owlet technology was awesome. It always feels good to find a company that has a great product and great people.
As a Newborn Care Specialist and as a mother, I fully endorse the Owlet and look forward to seeing it in many more of our clients’ homes. That being said, it is by no means a substitute for the standard safety techniques and procedures associated with the prevention of SIDS or any recommendations from medical professionals. Please ensure you are following the CDC recommendations for creating a safe sleep environment.
